Khajuraho is a small town located in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh and is famous for groups of Hindu and Jain temples.The Vindhya range of mountains as its beautiful backdrop adds more to the beauty of Khajuraho.
The temples of Khajuraho were built during the Chandela dynasty of Central India between 950 to 1050 A.D. . After the decline of the Chandela dynasty the temples were left under the cover of dense date palm trees for many years, and hence the name, Khajuraho. Khajur in Hindi means a date.
In 1838, a British army engineer, Captain T.S. Burt rediscovered them. By that time only 22 of the original 85 temples had survived.

These rulers claimed descent from the moon, hence the name Chand-ela. After the fall of the dynasty the temples were covered by dates and palm tree forests, and hence the name Khajurahoo(Khajur in hindi means date). Chandravarman the king of the Chandela dynasty who started building the first temples of the complex is said to be the son of Hemavati and the God of Moon.
